Michael Farthing, the chairman of a group of research universities has sent a warning to the Government over its proposed ideas of putting a premium on a university degree education in the UK. He claims students are being labelled as mere “consumers” able to buy themselves an education under the new plans of tuition fees.

Without any shadow of a doubt I believe everyone deserves the right to have access to a decent education. The gift of being able to read, write and consequently understand the world is by no means a privilege but a right in this day and age. As such, teachers, private tutors and other academics should feel extremely honoured to be able to give such a gift. Education is and has been everything to me throughout my life and I thank it for everything I have achieved.

Speaking at the MacTaggart Lecture at the Edinburgh International Television Festival, Google Chief Eric Schmidt has said education in Britain is holding back the country’s chances of success in the digital economy and I am finding it very difficult to disagree with him.
