The Truth About Social Media

Posted on: November 29, 2011

What exactly is social media? If Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and the like? Or is it the way online media is propagated? A mixed of both as well as others I think most will agree. I have spoken before about how life has always been social. Business continues to become more so with the proliferation of services such as LinkedIn but at the end of the day, social media being new is a false claim.

By no means am I saying the noise surrounding social media will die down but we shouldn’t look at it as something we have only started doing. Businesses have always had to service their clients. Companies have always had to serve and support their customers. Whether you do this via Twitter or by post mail, it doesn’t take away the necessity to do so.

Please check out this video:

Some very interesting stats and facts pulled out of the video:

  • Over 6.2 billion people DO NOT have a Facebook account. 8:1 of the world’s population.
  • If the non0users of Facebook were a country, it would be the largest country
  • Twitter has 92% awareness amongst online users yet only 8% usage
  • MySpace was bought for $500 million. Sold for $30 million
  • Only 6% of Internet users trust brand or products Twitter stream
  • Only 9% of Internet users trust a post from a brand they follow on Facebook
  • Research on the meaning of the Facebook ‘Like’ found that 25% of US Facebook users DISAGREE that marketers should interpret the Like to mean they are a fan or an advocate of the company

It is relieving to see statistics that supports the other argument. Marketing in a digital world ‘eh? Certainly it’s not easy, but at least it’s a ruddy good laugh 🙂
